The Tail of Two Deer

One of Dad, Ray, and Sara's favorite pastimes is deer hunting.  As soon as one season ends, they begin planning, preparing, dreaming, and of course, talking about next year when they'll surely get "the big one".  A couple of weeks ago, they ventured out to our property to see if any would come moseying on through to get the sweet potatoes they had thrown out.

Several hours after they had arrived, Ray saw what he thought was a 4-pointer and took a shot, but apparently it wasn't a good one because it headed toward the place where Dad was positioned.  Ray radioed over so he would be alert.  Dad was just getting back up into his tree stand when he saw, not a buck, but a doe passing.  His pack and the gun were still on the ground so he quickly pulled them up and worked to get the gun loose from his pack.  In his haste, the knot took too long to get undone so he just put the gun up to his shoulder ~ pack hanging from it and all ~ and took a shot.  Another not-so-perfect shot.

We received a call shortly thereafter telling us the wonderful news.  They had shot two deer -- a 4-pointer and a doe -- and they had only to find them.  After searching for a while, they finally found it....

Yes, it was one and the same and yet it was neither a 4-pointer nor a doe.

We are so thrilled to have meat in the freezer!  We've already had quite a few meals out of it.  This is the tenderest, juiciest, best tasting deer we've ever had!  It may be due to the 1/2 inch layer of fat it had packed on (it's going to be a hard winter!) and the belly full of acorns, corn, and sweet potatoes. : )  At any rate, we're looking forward to the next time they bring one home!

 Thus it ends...

  1. Hmm, is this the case of a story growing or shrinking? From a 4-point to a doe tp a LITTLE BABY!!! The meat is so tender cause the deer is so YOUNG! You meanies!! Ha ha! I'm sure you all are enjoying that meat!

  2. ACTUALLY....it wasn't a 4-pointer, a doe, OR a little baby. It was what they call a cow horn caused by a bad gene. If it had regular antlers, it probably would have been at least a 4-pointer if not more. See how long the horns are? Button bucks and spikes aren't that long. And since it wasn't small, that means we have even more meat to enjoy! : )

YES!!! We are enjoying the meat SOOOOOO much!

See you Friday? Hope so!!! (or should I say...PLEEEEEASE!?!?!?!?) : )
